Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the new season after picking up a calf injury.

The Mexico international had only just returned to action following a knee ligament injury picked up in the Champions League semi-final clash with Chelsea in April.

He has now been ruled out of the remainder of the European champions' pre-season tour to the United States.

He will miss Mexico's World Cup qualifier against the USA on August 12 and the Spanish Super Cup first leg against Athletic Bilbao on August 16.

Barcelona begin the defence of their La Liga crown against Sporting Gijon on August 31.
