FIFA will not suspend Henry
18 Jan 2010 - 16:41:21
France striker Thierry Henry has escaped any punishment from FIFA for his handball in the second leg of the World Cup qualification play-off against the Republic of Ireland.
The 32-year-old Barcelona star was condemned after handling the ball in the build-up to France's winning goal in the game in Paris.
The furore that followed the incident resulted in the Republic of Ireland demanding that the game be replayed, something which Henry also hinted would be the ideal scenario, but only after FIFA had ruled that is was not a possibility.
The world governing body's disciplinary committee has now concluded that there is "no legal foundation" for them to deal with the case so Henry will not be banned for any matches at this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.
FIFA said in a statement: "The disciplinary committee reached the conclusion that there was no legal foundation for the committee to consider the case because handling the ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement as stipulated in article 77a) of the FIFA disciplinary code.
"There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions for any incidents missed by match officials."
