Del Bosque aware of Xavi's injury

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has admitted that he had no option but to leave Xavi out of his squad for this month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Scotland.

The Barcelona star has continued to play this season despite suffering with tendonitis and Del Bosque is determined not to aggravate the midfielder's injury.

He said: "We were very sincere in our discussions. We know that he has had problems for a while and I do not think he has been focused on the game.

"He has been suffering from an injury for a long time now and we were worried that it was going to become a chronic problem. The player remains committed to the national team but his position had become untenable."
