Barcelona star Lionel Messi Summoned to Court
Lionel Messi has been summoned to appear in court on 17 September, following allegations of tax fraud.
Spanish authorities claim the 25-year-old, and his father Jorge, have evaded payments totalling more than €4m (£3.4m) due from the sale of the Barcelona star's image rights.
Summons were warranted following a complaint, signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado, which was filed with a courthouse in the Gava district of Barcelona on 12 June.
Both Argentineans deny the allegations, and a statement from Messi issued via Facebook earlier this month said: "We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about the news, because we have never committed any infringement.
"We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation."
According to Spanish news agency Efe, the four-time World Player of the Year could face up to six years in prison if convicted.
