Barca earn Super Cup triumph

Barcelona secured their second piece of silverware of the new season by edging out Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 after extra-time in the European Super Cup in Monaco.

The Catalans won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League last term and coach Pep Guardiola has seen his charges secure the Spanish and European Super Cups already this time around.

A tight match in the Stade Louis II was eventually settled by a goal from Pedro, following superb set-up play from Lionel Messi.

Guardiola said after his side's latest triumph: "The players have made a huge effort. They showed strength, personality and character.

"In other finals we were more into the match rhythm and in the middle of competition, but this caught us on the back of our holidays.

"But we didn't lose our essence, that has a lot of merit.

"I'm very lucky to have been chosen to coach these great players. I don't create players, I just try to advise and support them."
