Rolfes suffers knee injury

Bayer Leverkusen and Germany midfielder Simon Rolfes is set for a spell on the sidelines in the knowledge he needs further surgery on a troublesome knee injury.

The 28-year-old has missed three months of the current campaign due to the same problem and he has just returned to the first-team fold following the winter break.

He made an eight-minute substitute appearance during the 3-0 win over Hoffenheim on Sunday and the problem flared up once again.

German national team manager Oliver Bierhoff hopes he will be available for the World Cup but he looks set for several months in the treatment room.

Bierhoff said: "He should not give up too soon and our fingers our crossed for him that he can play again soon."

Speaking to Die Welt, Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Voller added: "This is a big shock for us and really hurts, especially for Simon, who had big hopes for the World Cup."
