Leaders extend Friedrich deal

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen have agreed a new contract with defender Manuel Friedrich to keep him at the club until the summer of 2013.

The 30-year-old Germany international centre-half joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2007 from Mainz and has since become a key figure at the heart of his side's defence.

This season Friedrich has scored twice in 15 league appearances for Jupp Heynckes' side, who head the standings by a point from Schalke going into the winter break.

Friedrich won nine caps for Germany earlier on in his career, but has not featured in nearly two years.

His debut came against Sweden in August 2006, while his last outing came in a 3-0 win in Austria in February 2008.
