Heynckes tips Bayer to improve

Coach Jupp Heynckes has tipped Bayer Leverkusen to improve on last season's fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga.

Heynckes has added Germany captain Michael Ballack to his squad on a free transfer from Chelsea and is confident the club is heading in the right direction on the eve of the new campaign.

Asked whether Bayer will improve, he replied: "I think so. If all our players stay fit and healthy, we have a top team which can go on to become very successful and make a real name for themselves.

"The young players will develop alongside leaders like Sami Hyypia, Michael Ballack and Simon Rolfes, I'm confident of that.

"We have a team that plays excellent football and they have the right character to boot."
