Bayer Leverkusen head coach Jupp Heynckes has signed the Hamburg midfielder Sidney Sam for an undisclosed transfer fee after Toni Kroos returned to Bayern Munich following his season-long loan spell at the BayArena.

The 22-year-old came through Hamburg's youth academy but made only five first-team appearances, all from the substitute's bench, for the club.

He was loaned out to Kaiserslautern for the 2009-10 campaign before Heynckes snapped him up on a five-year contract.

Bayer's head coach said of his latest capture: "Sidney Sam was one of the most exciting players around in the 2. Bundesliga last season and played a major role in Kaiserslautern's promotion.

"I think he will do a great job with us."
