Helmes returns for Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes was delighted to return to action as a substitute in the 4-0 home win over Stuttgart at the weekend.

The 25-year-old Germany international had not featured at all this season, having been sidelined by a serious knee injury suffered soon after the end of last term.

He told his club's official website: "It's great to be back. The team's playing really well at the moment and that's given me the time I need.

"I'm still not 100 per cent fit. I'm going to have to carry on giving my all in training and get one or two run-outs from the bench.

"I haven't had much match-practice recently and that's the be all and end all for a footballer. If you've been out injured for five months then you need time to get back into the groove."
