Helmes makes return pledge

Striker Patrick Helmes has revealed his intention to return to first-team action with Bayer Leverkusen once he makes a full recovery from his cruciate ligament injury.

Helmes suffered the problem before the season began and is yet to play this term but, after scoring an outstanding 21 goals in 34 games last year, will be welcomed back into a side that is top of the Bundesliga despite his absence.

"I hope to be back in training in mid-November. I know the lads are playing great and I expect to play mainly as a substitute until the end of the first phase of the season," Helmes said, speaking to the newspaper Bild.

"For me, there remains half a season to prove my skills," added Helmes, before saying of his chances of playing for Germany in the World Cup: "Taking part for me is a dream."
