Ryan Stevenson shines as Ayr defeat Cowdenbeath

Ryan Stevenson hit a brace as Ayr United kept their play-off charge on track with a 4-1 Ladbrokes League One victory over Cowdenbeath.

Ayr started brightly and Stevenson headed Nicky Devlin's cross against the post before they took the lead in the 14th minute when Robbie McCrorie climbed highest to nod home Brian Gilmour's corner.

Just two minutes later they doubled their advantage when Stevenson fired home a right-footed effort and then saw Alin Roman tip his free-kick over the crossbar.

Ayr continued to pile forward and Roman again had to be sharp to tip Craig Moore's effort over.

But the Ayr pressure told again 10 minutes before the break when Gilmour's cross found Moore and his header found its way into the top corner.

Cowdenbeath got themselves back into the game six minutes after the break when Declan Hughes fired home from just outside the box.

Jordan Preston forced another save from Roman before Stevenson drilled home his second of the evening.
