Defending Austrian league champions Austria Vienna said Sunday that Croatian coach Nenad Bjelica has been sacked after only eight months in charge after a poor run of form.

The new trainer for the rest of the season is Herbert Gager, coach of the amateur side and of the club's successful youth team, Austria said in a statement.

"We had to react but we don't want to blame everything on the trainer," Austria board member Thomas Parits said.

"Over the winter break we tried lots of things with new players and various measures, but unfortunately none of it has worked."

Austria Vienna have gone five league games without a win and are currently fifth in the table, 24 points adrift of runaway leaders Red Bull Salzburg.
