Cahill to volunteer

26 Jun 2006 - 09:47:16

Australia star Tim Cahill is willing to take a spot-kick if Monday's World Cup last 16 clash with Italy goes to a penalty shoot-out.

The Everton midfielder has taken penalties for David Moyes' side in the past and is confident in his abilities in pressurised situations.

The Socceroos won their place in this summer's tournament after beating Uruguay in a shoot-out and Cahill said: "It's whoever wants to step up, same as Uruguay.

"Guus Hiddink will ask the first five most confident players to put their hands up. It doesn't matter who takes them, as long as you're confident enough.

"It's worked out on the day. Someone could have a groin problem, or an injury. But we've got a lot of confident players out there.

"I've never been in that situation before, bar the Uruguay game. I've taken three or four in the league, and I think I've scored two or three. But I'd put my hand up, most definitely. You just don't want to put too much pressure on yourself, that's all."
