50 Players to watch at the World Cup - No 27 Tim Cahill

06 May 2010 10:23

Our countdown of players to watch at this summer's World Cup continues here on football.co.uk, with Tim Cahill the centre of attention at number 27.

Name: Tim Cahill

Age: 30

Club: Everton

International Caps: 37

International Goals: 19

Cahill doesn't have as many international caps as he should, after becoming entangled in a legal dispute with FIFA over his eligibility to play for Australia.

Cahill played one game for Samoa Under 17s and under the old FIFA laws, was only eligible to play for Samoa, the birthplace of his mother.

However, he eventually won and started a motion that allowed players to switch their international allegiance if they had not competed in a competitive match at youth level.

Since then he hasn't looked back, averaging at more than a goal every other game for the Socceroos, including their first goal at a World Cup finals against Japan in 2006.

Despite only standing at 5ft 10", Cahill has forged a reputation of being deadly in the air, with his run-timing and leap bettered by very few in the Premier League, if not the world.

Easily Australia's most dangerous forward-going player, he could cause problems for any defence in South Africa if given the opportunity.
