Lesotho's 17-year-old sensation Montoeli Sonopo has joined Spanish side Atletico Madrid, becoming the first player from the tiny African nation to join a European team, his club said on Thursday.

"We are busy patching up the finer details of his move but we have his contract already, so it is a done deal," Lioli FC president Lebohang Thotanyana told AFP.

The winger is awaiting his visa so he can fly to Madrid to join his new club, though he will not join the senior team straight away.

"He could not sign a professional contract because of his age. He will definitely join the Atletico reserve side first," Thotanyana added.

Sonopo was spotted by Atletico scouts during Lesotho's surprise qualifying campaign for the Under-20 African Youth Championship.
