Athletic Bilbao winger Iker Muniain has been given the medical all-clear to resume playing after undergoing knee surgery following six months out of action.

The Spain international ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in April and missed the the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona in May and the Spanish Super Cup, which saw Athletic brush aside Barca 5-1 on aggregate in August to clinch their first trophy in 31 years.

A statement from the Basque club read: "The player has been given the all-clear due to the progress in his recovery and his physical condition has allowed him to return to normal activity with the rest of the squad."

Muniain made 25 league starts for Athletic last season and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension this summer which will keep him tied to Los Leones until June 30, 2019.

The 22-year-old could return to action in Monday's La Liga game against Sporting Gijon in San Mames.

Athletic, who visit Partizan Belgrade in Thursday's Europa League, are 14th in Spain's top flight with just two wins from their opening eight games.
