Aston Villa are heading for a goalkeeping crisis after it was confirmed that Stuart Taylor is struggling to be fit enough to feature in Saturday's Premier League clash against
Newcastle United because of a calf injury.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill is already without the services of Thomas Sorensen as the Denmark international is struggling with a hamstring problem.
If Taylor fails to recover in time, O'Neill could hand a debut to loan signing Scott Carson.
O'Neill said: "Stuart Taylor has a calf problem. The scans have come up not too bad and I'll see how he is towards the end of the week.
"I won't go into specific positions, but competition for places can only be a healthy thing.
"If we have the same competition for places as Liverpool, where they can afford to leave people like Crouch at home, that would be nice.
"For us to have competition for places can only be good news for me and I've never had a problem with those decisions.
"Martin Laursen didn't train on Monday, but he's feeling much better. It's the same with John Carew, who did train."
