Bolton Wanderers have failed in a £4million approach for Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill.
The 22-year-old former England Under-21 international recently spent three months on loan at Sheffield United and Villa boss Martin O'Neill revealed on Cahill's return to Villa Park that there were several clubs interested in signing him.
However, the Midlands club have rejected an approach from Bolton for the defender, who has made 31 appearances for the Villa first team.
Meanwhile, O'Neill has played down talk of a transfer window departure for Marlon Harewood.
The 27-year-old former West Ham United striker has started only two Carling Cup games since his summer arrival, but O'Neill wants to keep him at Villa Park.
Harewood came off the bench to score one of the goals in Monday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
He said: "Obviously the players here have been keeping him out of the side because they've done well. They've been quality.
"But that performance on Monday night will have given Marlon great confidence.
"I've had a host of interest in him but I've never had any intention of taking advantage of that. I want him here for us. He's said he wants to play here and wants to fight for his chance here."
