Aston Villa have terminated the contract of Eric Djemba-Djemba by mutual consent, ending the midfielder's unhappy spell at Villa Park.
The 26-year-old joined Villa from Manchester United in January 2005, but failed to make the expected impact and made just 11 appearances before being allowed to move on.
Cameroon international Djemba-Djemba ended last season out on loan at Burnley and Villa's summer signing of Nigel Reo-Coker ended any hopes of a rehabilitation with Martin O'Neill's side.
"It is fair to say that Eric has not really experienced the best of times since he arrived here from Old Trafford a couple of years ago," O'Neill told the club's official website.
"We have agreed to part company and this arrangement will give Eric the opportunity to rebuild and reignite his career - he goes with our best wishes."
Djemba-Djemba initially moved to England in the summer of 2003, signing for the Red Devils for £3.5million from Nantes.
