Veteran Solano joins Leicester City after Newcastle and Colchester opt out

High hopes: Solano had hoped for a return to England Veteran midfielder Nolberto Solano has signed for Leicester City until the end of the season, subject to international clearance. The Peruvian has joined the Foxes after a successful trial following his release from home-country club Universitario de Deportes. The move to the Walkers Stadium follows unsuccessful trials at Colchester and Solano's former club Newcastle. Leicester are hopeful he will make his bow in the FA Cup Fourth Round against Cardiff tomorrow although more likely start date will come at home, ironically against Newcastle on January 30. Leicester are the classy 35-year-old's fourth English club following a 10-year top flight career at Newcastle, twice, Aston Villa and West Ham. He left Upton Park for Greek outfit Larissa in 2008. He returned to Peru a year later. Colchester had initially been impressed with Solano but failed to produce a contract allowing Newcastle to swoop in. They too saw promise but have stalled on making their former player an offer. Promotion-chasing Leicester are the Championship's surprise package this term having only gained promotion last season. Manager Nigel Pearson, who worked alongside Solano at St James' Park said on Thursday: 'He's got a lot of quality. He'd be a good acquisition at this moment in time.'   Portsmouth accept offer of £1m from Newcastle for Mike WilliamsonMan United defender Simpson set for permanent switch to NewcastleThe List: Sportsmail's top 50 free transfers, Nos 30-21JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW 2010: All moves at every Premier League club
