Spurs outcast David Bentley hopes for swift exit after opening talks with Aston Villa

David Bentley is in talks with Aston Villa and admits he is hoping for a swift end to his Tottenham Hostpur nightmare. The lifelong Spurs fan fell out of favour towards the end of his debut season at White Hart Lane and is not in Harry Redknapp's plans. But the manager may raise less than half the £16million paid by the club to Blackburn Rovers for the England winger last summer. Bentley is on holiday in Spain's swish resort of Puerto Banus, but that hasn't stopped him orchestrating a move to the West Midlands. 'I'm in talks with Villa at the moment,' he told The Sun. 'I really don't want to say much more. But we'll see what happens. 'I'm hopeful of sorting it out as soon as possible.' The 24-year-old failed to make a Barclays Premier League start following January's 3-2 defeat at Bolton, and he scored just one League goal last season - albeit a spectacular dipping volley from 40 yards against Arsenal. His disappointing form also saw him drop out of the England set-up with the World Cup just a year away. Villa boss Martin O'Neill has cash to spend following the £12m sale of Gareth Barry to Manchester City and will expect to get his man in the next fortnight. The Irishman has also been linked to Jermaine Jenas and Tom Huddlestone, while Spurs are thought to be keen on Villa striker John Carew. Redknapp could sell up to 14 players as he looks to raise money for summer recruits. He has indicated he needs three quality additions if the team are to finally break into the Big Four, though a move for Real Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy could be scuppered by the former Manchester United striker's £90,000-a-week wage demands.
