Sidwell relieved with reaction
11 Nov 2008 - 12:37:29
Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell is relieved that his team-mates have forgiven him for the error that allowed Middlesbrough to score their winner on Saturday.
The match appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw when the former Reading and Chelsea midfielder had a rush of blood to the head.
Sidwell's poor pass allowed Tuncay to grab Boro's late winner, but he told Villa's official website: "The lads have been terrific. But that's what I'd expect because we're a close team - good friends on and off the pitch.
"They've been as I'd have acted with them. They've said it's not a problem and that they're sure that I'll do a good job for the team. That's all I could ask for.
"We have a great team spirit and a super mentality. We know how to win games.
"We have the skill and talent needed but we also have that heart and desire to battle too. I feel we have both elements in this squad. You need both to succeed.
"The mistake took a shine off a special moment. I've wanted to score at home for Villa for quite a while. To do it on my first league start was great and a special moment.
"I nearly scored right at the end in front of the Holte End soon after my error - that would have really helped. I should have scored or at least hit the target. I suppose my luck just wasn't in at that time."
