    Shorey ponders Villa future

    18 Aug 2009 - 17:07:42

Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey is unsure whether he will still be at the club beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

The left-back has struggled to maintain a first team place with the Villains since arriving from Reading a year ago, while falling out of Fabio Capello's England reckoning.

Despite starting in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Wigan Athletic, the 28-year-old has often been overlooked in favour of right-sided player Luke Young on the left side of defence.

And with Wilfred Bouma top of the pecking order at Villa Park, Shorey may find first team opportunities becoming further limited.

But he refused to be drawn on speculation, insisting he is focussing on matters on the pitch.

"All I'm concentrating on is just being as fit as I can be and then what will come of that will come of it," Shorey told the Birmingham Mail.

"Hopefully Freddie (Bouma) will be back. It will be nice if he gets back soon, he's been out for a while, so it will be good for Aston Villa to have him back.

"Who knows in football? No-one knows what's round the corner, but I'm here and I'm working hard to try and get into the first team.

"Every player gets speculation about them at some time - sometimes it's rubbish and sometimes there's something in it, but you just have to get on with it."
