Martin O'Neill has reassured out-of-favour full-back Nicky Shorey that he could still have a future with Aston Villa.
The 28-year-old England international has been allowed to go out on loan to Championship side Nottingham Forest this season.
The arrival of Stephen Warnock from Blackburn Rovers saw him drop further down the pecking order.
However, O'Neill has hinted that the former Reading defender will be given more of a look-in during the second half of the season following his return from Forest.
"Selling Nicky is not something that I'm looking to do at this minute and nothing concrete has developed," he explained. "If there was an offer, I'd sit down with Nicky and his agent to discuss it but I'm not actively seeking (to sell him).
"Nicky thought when Stephen Warnock arrived that his chances would be limited at the time.
"But he's capable of fighting back. I think he's enjoying it immensely at Forest and he's playing which is what he wanted to do."
