O'Neill thrilled to land Downing

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill believes his capture of Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing could prove to be one of the bargain buys of the summer.

The 24-year-old signed a four-year contract at Villa Park earlier this week despite currently being sidelined by a foot injury.

The England international cost Villa £10million plus a further £2million depending on the appearances he makes for the club which is a good piece of business, according to O'Neill.

The Villa boss told the Sunday Mirror: "£10million is a bargain. It's great value and he's a superb acquisition.

"He's got pace, although he admits he could add a few more goals to his game. I'm delighted to have him.

"He's had a nasty injury and won't be available for a considerable time, but he'll be sensational when he is."

Villa are tipped to complete the signing of Leeds United midfielder Fabian Delph later this month.
