Manager Martin O'Neill has played down rumours suggesting that he is interested in boosting his strike options at Aston Villa by making a move for Rangers' Kris Boyd.
The former Kilmarnock hot-shot has also been linked with a January transfer window switch to Birmingham City, where he would be reunited with former Gers boss Alex McLeish.
But reports suggesting Boyd was on O'Neill's radar intensified when the forward was spotted at Villa Park during Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final second leg victory against Blackburn Rovers.
However, O'Neill was quick to play down the reports, saying: "I don't know if players are at football games but the other part I can definitely comment on. I was quite surprised to see the story that he is signing for us.
"Of course, I know the player very well indeed. He was in Scotland when I was in charge of Celtic - but there isn't any truth in it."
Boyd, who is the Scottish Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer, is sidelined until mid-February after a hernia operation.
He was forced to leave the field at New Douglas Park in his team's Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton on 10 January and had surgery in Manchester a few days later.
