O'Neill reeling after heavy loss
23 Mar 2009 - 07:44:33
Martin O'Neill admitted his Aston Villa side are suffering from a lack of confidence after their 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick for the Reds, with two of his goals coming from penalties, and there were further goals by Albert Riera and Dirk Kuyt while Villa ended the game with ten men after Brad Friedel was sent off.
Villa have taken just one point from their last six Premier League matches, with O'Neill admitting his team's form is becoming a cause for concern.
He said: "We were poor and there's no getting away from it.
"Liverpool are playing very well at the moment. They are a very fine side. I don't think they'd have needed any help from us but we certainly helped them.
"We certainly contributed to our own downfall with some of the goals that we conceded in the game. But we're better than what we've shown.
"We're in a lull at the moment. The players are a bit down in terms of confidence and that can go from game to game or minute to minute.
"It's up to us to try and come out of this and the only way to do that is by winning a game."
