O'Neill ponders Carson deal

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has hinted that he may try and turn Liverpool loan goalkeeper Scott Carson's stay at Villa Park into a permanent one.

The 22-year-old England squad member has been in superb form since joining Villa from the Reds in a season-long deal, with O'Neill targeting a possible permanent switch.

He told The Sun: "A loan can always be with a view to a permanent deal.

"If it goes very well, there is the possibility of the deal becoming permanent, but Liverpool might have something to say because he is their goalkeeper."

Meanwhile, Villa midfielder Craig Gardner has challenged his side to continue their fine form and make a bid for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

He told the club's official website: "Why not go up to fourth? Confidence is high, we're playing well, there's pace in abundance in the team, so what's stopping us?

"I don't think anyone will be surprised, people expect us to be up there with the players and manager we've got. We've beaten Chelsea and West Ham, we drew at Tottenham so why not?

"I think the manager wants to build a team for the next six or seven years. Obviously he's good at his job and he's filling the team with young players and to be where we are as a young team is incredible."
