O'Neill: We deserved to win

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill thought his side deserved their narrow 1-0 UEFA Cup win at Slavia Prague.

A tight game was settled when Steve Sidwell's shot was deflected into the net by John Carew, but O'Neill thought his side were worthy of winning by the fortunate goal.

Villa keeper Brad Guzan was forced to produce a string of fine saves after the break as the side from the Czech capital dominated the second 45 minutes, but O'Neill said: "I thought it was a great game of football.

"I thought we were really excellent in the first half, perhaps could have scored some more goals, but I was expecting, and got, a second-half onslaught from Slavia Prague and I thought they proved what a really good footballing side they are.

"However, overall I thought we deserved to win the game and we're delighted to have won.

"John Carew would have known very little about the goal, but it wouldn't have been the first goal he's scored and not known much about."
