Mellberg eyeing new deal
26 Oct 2006 - 17:50:50
Sweden defender Olof Mellberg is ready to commit his long-term future to Aston Villa.
The 29-year-old's current contract is scheduled to expire in the summer of 2008, but Villains boss Martin O'Neill is rumoured to be planning to offer him an extension.
Mellberg, who was close to joining Spanish side Levante last summer, has not heard anything official from Villa, but is keen to open talks.
"I haven't really heard anything myself about a new contract. I read something about it in the papers," he told PA Sport.
"There are a few of us in a similar situation contract-wise. But I would like to stay at Aston Villa if they offer me a new one. Definitely.
"I am not looking to leave. It has been a good start to the season and I have felt good personally. There is no reason to say no if there is a new contract offer.
"My own form has been good all season. I felt strong pre-season and I have felt good the whole season."
Mellberg joined Villa from Racing Santander in a £5million deal in 2001 and has since made 169 Premiership appearances for the club.
