McAllister accepts Villa role

18 September 2010 02:52
Former Leeds United and Coventry City boss Gary McAllister has been confirmed as the new assistant manager of Aston Villa. The 45-year-old will be Gerard Houllier's assistant at Villa Park, while Gordon Cowans will work as the club's first-team coach. Rafa Gonzalez will be goalkeeping coach and Robert Duverne will assist as coach/fitness coach. McAllister has been working as Middlesbrough's first-team coach since May. Houllier has turned to McAllister after other former Liverpool stars, Phil Thompson and Dietmar Hamann, rejected the chance to work with him at Villa. The Frenchman's commitments as technical director with the French Football Federation mean he is unlikely to take charge of a Premier League game until 26 September when Wolves visit Villa Park. Kevin MacDonald remains in caretaker charge for the clash with Bolton Wanderers.
