Marlon eyes starting spot

Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood has set his sights on a starting place after a string of impressive substitute displays.

The former West Ham striker scored Villa's second in Sunday's 2-1 victory at Reading which kept Martin O'Neill's side in the hunt for Champions League football.

But, despite spending the majority of the season on the substitutes bench, Harewood believes he can win a starting place in the latter part of the campaign.

The 28-year-old has netted three goals in 12 substitute appearances in the Premier League.

He said: "I want to play my part and I'd rather not be known as super-sub.

"I want to start the games, but I don't make the choices. Martin O'Neill picks the team and wherever he puts me I'll be happy to be part of it.

"It's hard to take when you're not playing, but I'm experienced enough now to take it as it comes.

"There's no point getting irate about it. Once you go out on that pitch you just have to show what you can do."
