Liverpool considered Darren Bent bid

Liverpool considered a bid for Darren Bent before the striker's £24million move from Sunderland to Aston Villa. Bent's name was on a list of potential targets for the Reds as they browsed the transfer market for a player to take some of the burden off Fernando Torres. Ajax star Luis Suarez tops the list and director of football strategy Damien Comolli revealed England international Bent was ruled out as the Anfield hierarchy did not think he could form a potent partnership with World Cup winner Torres. New home: Bent settles in to life with Aston Villa during a training session 'We thought of him (Bent), but we looked at his profile and thought that he would not be very complementary to Fernando Torres,' said Comolli. 'He is a player who is, as the English say, a lone wolf. He needs to play alone in attack.' Suarez could still check in at Anfield before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month and Comolli insists high-profile players have not been put off by the Reds' struggles this season. Kop idol: Torres could do with a strike partner to help him out at Anfield A miserable run led to the departure of manager Roy Hodgson - with Kenny Dalglish taking over - and the club lie in the bottom half of the Premier League. But Comolli said: 'I am surprised in a way, given our results, the number of top-level players who want to join us. They say that Liverpool is an attractive club and most are also telling me "You've had a bad season, but you won't have two".' And the 38-year-old insists cash is there for the likes of Suarez. He said: 'There is no more debt. The owners are willing to invest, there is plenty of money.'  Dalglish ready to splash the cash as Liverpool bid to wrap up Suarez dealWantaway Liverpool forward Babel set to miss out on 'dream' Ajax return Reina vows to stay with Liverpool and bring the glory days back to AnfieldAll the latest Liverpool news, features and opinion  Explore more:People: Darren Bent, Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson, Fernando Torres Places: Liverpool, United Kingdom
