Aston Villa's loan goalkeeper Scott Carson has admitted that he would prefer to play in the Championship next season rather than be second choice at a Premier League club.
The 22-year-old England international is coming towards the end of a season-long loan at Villa Park and is all but certain to be allowed to leave Liverpool next summer.
However, a permanent stay in the Midlands has yet to be finalised and Carson is keeping his options open.
He said: "Will I be at Villa next season? I can't say yes or no.
"I don't know what Martin O'Neill's plans are here and I have some important decisions to make in the summer.
"But I do not want to go out on loan again. I would like to get settled and find a home for the next five or six years.
"I want to be number one at a club whether it be Liverpool, Aston Villa or somewhere else.
"It is doubtful whether Liverpool will say I am their number one because Jose Reina has been outstanding for the last two or three seasons.
"I wouldn't want to go back to being a number two, even at a club like Liverpool. I would prefer to be playing in the Championship rather than being number two in the Champions League.
"I have been a number one for the past two years and I can't not play football on a Saturday. I need to be involved."
