Aston Villa 0-1 Blackburn - Match report

Blackburn finished their campaign with a 1-0 victory at Aston Villa courtesy of Richard Dunne's late own goal.

Dunne headed into his own net six minutes from time to ensure Rovers finished 10th in the Barclays Premier League.

Other results meant Villa, who had plenty of chances to win themselves, hung on to sixth place and will not have to play an extra round in next season's Europa League.

James Collins forced Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson into an early save before David Dunn drove wide at the other end.

Defender Grant Hanley - making his senior debut for Rovers - then headed wide from a Dunn corner, while Robinson was forced to keep out a fierce drive from Collins and a 25-yard free-kick from James Milner.

Gabriel Agbonlahor also tested the former Tottenham stopper with a close-range header as Villa finished the first half strongly.

Villa almost made the breakthrough in the second half but Milner was unable to get the decisive touch at the far post after John Carew had headed on Stewart Downing's cross.

The visitors saw appeals for a spot-kick rejected 15 minutes from time when Chris Samba tangled with Carew.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill then threw on Nathan Delfouneso in search of a winner, but it was Rovers who found it six minutes from time.

Martin Olsson delivered the cross and Junior Hoilett dived to meet it with his head - but it was his marker Dunne who got the final touch as the ball flashed past Brad Friedel and in.
