Young hails patient Shorey

Luke Young has paid tribute to fellow Aston Villa full-back Nicky Shorey and backed him to stay in the side. Shorey, who joined Villa from Reading last summer, lost his place in Martin O'Neill's side in November and only came back in for the recent clash with Manchester United. Young has now reverted to his customary right-back role after spending much of the season on the opposite flank. The former Middlesbrough man has been impressed by Shorey and admits he was puzzled by O'Neill's decision to leave him out for so long. "Nicky has been patient. You don't become a bad player overnight and you can see day in and day out that he is a great player," said Young. "I'm glad he has got his chance now and I hope he stays in now until the end of the season. "I was asked to play left-back for a good number of games in a row when we have got an England international (Shorey) out of the side. "I am not sure the reasons why and the manager makes the decisions and you respect those. "All I know is Nicky Shorey is a great left-back and I am sure a lot of teams would want him." Young missed Villa's 1-1 draw with Bolton on Saturday but could be back in contention for the clash with Hull City next Monday.
