Wigan whizkid McCarthy handed first Republic of Ireland call up by Trapattoni

Wigan teenager James McCarthy was today called up by Republic of Irelandmanager Giovanni Trapattoni for next week's friendly against Brazil.

Midfielder McCarthy, 19, received his first call after a series of promisingperformances for the Latics, who he joined from Hamilton last summer.

Trapattoni also selected 19-year-old Manchester City defender Greg Cunninghamand 22-year-old Portsmouth centre-back Marc Wilson for the first time, as theRepublic prepare for their first match since controversially losing out toFrance in their World Cup play-off.
