We were naive! Aston Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov demands improvement after Newcastle horror show

23 August 2010 15:28
Skipper Stiliyan Petrov has blamed Aston Villa's horror show at Newcastle ontheir own naivety. [LNB]The midlanders turned in a desperately poor display on Tyneside as local heroAndy Carroll inspired the home side to a 6-0 victory with a hat-trick. [LNB]To make matters worse, striker John Carew missed a penalty with the score at0-0 to let the promoted Magpies off the hook and pave the way for their goalrush. [LNB] Hit for six: Andy Carroll smashed in a hat-trick as Newcastle demolished Villa[LNB]The humiliating defeat came as a major shock after a 3-0 opening-day victoryover West Ham and a midweek draw with Rapid Vienna, who head for Villa Park onThursday evening. [LNB]Petrov told AVTV: 'We will be a changed side in the next game. We have thequality, but we were probably a little bit naive. [LNB]'We thought we were going to come over here and get an easy game after ourperformance last week [against West Ham]. But last week was last week and we need to be prepared for every singlegame.[LNB]Honest assessment: Petrov (right) admits his side must learn from their mistakes[LNB]'We are really disappointed because our defensive record has been great. We have been defending as a team really well and we have been really strong, but we missed that here.[LNB]'I said before, we have a belief. That is the main thing and we know we can dobetter, but we need to avoid this. If we want to achieve something, we need to avoid these games. [LNB] 'We need to bebetter, we need to show more concentration and we need to see these gamesthrough.' [LNB]Villa actually started the game the better, but Carew's miss seemed to liftNewcastle and once they got their noses in front, the visitors simply crumbled. [LNB]They were 3-0 down by the break as Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan and Carroll struck, and Kevin McDonald's side was beaten long before Carroll completed his trebleeither side of Nolan's second of the game. [LNB]Harsh lesson: Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald must lift his players after the drubbing at St James' Park[LNB]Petrov said: 'It is not a nice feeling. We wish the next game could cometomorrow so we could show everybody it was a one-off. [LNB]'Nobody likes to lose, especially with a result like that, so we will beraring to go back and start again. The season is ahead of us and we just need to perform and get better andbetter.[LNB]'We take all the responsibility. We play really brilliantly the one week, thencome all the way up here and play really poorly. [LNB]'We need to get that balance and sometimes we just need to battle our waythrough. [LNB]'We started very well, but we missed a penalty and everything went againstus. We weren't defending well enough, we didn't close people quickly enough, wewere on the back foot and we gave them enough time. [LNB]'We conceded six goals, so it is up to us now to change all this, what we havedone wrong. It is a long season - you cannot just put your head down now. [LNB]'We have just started now and it is going to be a long season. It is an oddgame we will see where we are going to end up.'
