Walsall 1 Aston Villa 3: Darren Bent at the double as travelling fans snub Alex McLeish

Alex McLeish declared himself satisfied after his first match in charge of Aston Villa, despite being ignored by the club's fans at Walsall.

Villa's 4,000-strong contingent instead cheered Shay Given's debut and a lively Darren Bent in the 3-1 victory.

McLeish made a point of stepping on to the pitch to applaud the Villa fans but they did not respond.

'You have to confront these things in life,' he said. 'It was a good reception. I'm delighted the Villa fans saw a few goals.'

Two of those came from Bent, who then helped set up Emile Heskey's third. Paul Marshall pulled one back for the home side.
