Villa waiting on Carew

John Carew will be left to determine his own level of fitness ahead of Aston Villa's meeting with Rapid Vienna. Martin O'Neill's men are due to face the Austrian outfit on Thursday in a Europa League qualifier. The Villans are understandably keen to have their best possible side available as they begin their European adventure. Norwegian frontman Carew remains a major doubt, though, as he continues to struggle with an infected toe. The 29-year-old ruled himself out of Villa's Premier League opener against Wigan on Saturday and O'Neill admits he will not force any of his players to play through the pain barrier. "The doctor had mentioned it to me, but I thought he would be OK, otherwise I wouldn't have put him on the bench in the first place," the Villa boss said in the Express and Star following a 2-0 setback against the Latics. "I was hoping if needed - and even if we were going well he might have been - that he would have been OK, but obviously John thought his foot was sore enough not to be able to take his place. "It will always be the player's decision. I wouldn't ask players to play against their will if they thought they were going to injure themselves. "I've never done that. We're all in today (Monday) so we'll reassess injuries and fitness with all of them."
