Villa v Spurs live!

15 March 2009 15:31
90 Keane wins a corner for Spurs and I sense this won't be floated into the box.[LNB]90 Assou-Ekotto keeps a calm head and clears under pressure.[LNB]90 There will be three minutes of added time.[LNB]89 Petrov's shot deflects high into the air but Luke Young is penalised for fouling Gomes.[LNB]87 Carew flicks on a long ball but Spurs have plenty of men back.[LNB]86 Keane flicks a clearance into the Villa half. Can Spurs hang on here?[LNB]85 GOAL! CAREW! Milner with a high, hanging cross from the right and Carew towers above Woodgate to plant a header in off the bar. We're in for a frantic last five minutes now![LNB]84 The ball bounces kindly for Barry in the box but he doesn't connect properly and Gomes makes an easy save.[LNB]83 Another change for Villa as Craig Gardner replaces Heskey.[LNB]82 Spurs make another change as Jamie O'Hara comes on for the inventive Modric.[LNB]80 Lovely move from Spurs and Jenas picks out Lennon on the right. His cross to the middle is wayward, though, and Villa clear.[LNB]79 Agbonlahor is replaced by Nathan Delfouneso.[LNB]78 Agbonlahor almost picks out Heskey but King sticks out a leg to intercept the pass.[LNB]77 Heskey is receiving treatment for a head injury after a tangle with King.[LNB]76 Carlos Cuellar heads away Modric's corner.[LNB]75 Keane finds Lennon on the right and his cross flashes across the face of the Villa goal.[LNB]74 Assou-Ekotto does well to tackle Agbonlahor and clear his lines.[LNB]73 Friedel saves well from a curling Bent effort from just outside the box.[LNB]72 Ashley Young's free-kick is hopeless. It's too high and goes behind for a goal-kick, and he has the audacity to blame his team-mates![LNB]71 Keane is cautioned after giving a needless free-kick away in a dangerous area.[LNB]70 Carew wins a corner. Villa take it short, float it towards the back-post and Gomes punches it clear.[LNB]69 Assou-Ekotto receives treatment after a clash with Agbonlahor.[LNB]68 Modric goes in the book for kicking the ball away.[LNB]67 Barry chips a ball towards the back-post, Gomes flaps at it but wins the free-kick.[LNB]66 Carew chases a lost cause and it bounces through to Gomes.[LNB]64 Petrov shoots from 30 yards and it bounces awkwardly for Gomes who saves with his chest.[LNB]63 Milner makes progress down the Villa right but his cross is cleared by Jenas.[LNB]62 Spurs are enjoying more of the ball second half as Modric sprays one out to Lennon.[LNB]61 Modric forces a good save out of Friedel after a left-foot drive from 20 yards.[LNB]60 John Carew comes on for Knight. Desperate times call for desperate measures.[LNB]59 Some scrappy passes in midfield as Villa desperately try to get back into the game.[LNB]57 Gomes is in commanding form and he comes to the edge of his box to collect another high ball ahead of Barry.[LNB]56 Gomes comes off his line to collect a high cross and he quickly bowls it out to Jenas.[LNB]55 Lennon hits a sweet volley inches over the bar. A great effort from the little winger.[LNB]54 Friedel punches clear Modric's corner. The goalkeeper was fouled anyway.[LNB]53 Lennon has space down the Spurs right and he fires a cross in low. It bounces back to him and he wins a corner.[LNB]51 It's been all Aston Villa but somehow they are 2-0 down. How will Martin O'Neill's team react here?[LNB]50 GOAL! BENT! Talk about smash and grab! Just like in the first half Spurs steal an early goal. Robbie Keane thought he'd scored from a tight angle but Darren Bent bundled it over the line to make sure. 2-0 Spurs.[LNB]50 Ashley Young leads a Villa counter-attack but the ball gets caught in his feet and Spurs win i tback.[LNB]49 This time Keane heads the ball clear.[LNB]48 Heskey wins the header from the free-kick and it deflects behind for a corner. From that Villa win another flag-kick...[LNB]47 Heskey is brought down by Palacios in a dangerous area.[LNB]46 Spurs get the second period under way.[LNB]1655 It's all Villa, and if you fancy them to go on and win the game they are 7/2 to do so with Sky Bet. Spurs are 5/8 to hang on and collect the three points.[LNB]45 The referee blows for half-time and it's been a pulsating first 45. Total dominance from Villa, but Spurs lead 1-0 after that early goal from Jenas.[LNB]45 Barry volleys a left-footed cross towards the penalty spot and Heskey climbs highest before looping his header onto the bar. Great effort from the England striker.[LNB]45 Petrov shuffles a shot along the ground from the edge of the box and that's easy for Gomes.[LNB]45 There will be three minutes of added time at the end of the first period.[LNB]44 The Spurs corner is cleared but they soon have the ball back. Spurs work it to Modric who shoots from about eight yards out and Friedel makes an instinctive one-handed save.[LNB]43 Lennon escapes down the Spurs right and fires in a low cross that Knight gets in the way of for a corner.[LNB]42 Ashley Young cuts inside from the Villa left and curls another effort well wide.[LNB]41 Reo-Coker has space on the Villa right but Assou-Ekotto is there to prevent the cross from coming in.[LNB]40 Gomes catches a high cross from Reo-Coker under pressure from Heskey.[LNB]39 Now King does well to smother the threat posed by Agbonlahor.[LNB]38 Barry spots Agbonlahor and finds him with a good pass, but Woodgate is strong and holds off the threat before making the challenge.[LNB]37 Luke Young isn't as effective as his namesake in the final third and gives the ball away on the edge of the Spurs penalty area.[LNB]36 Spurs double up on Ashley Young and that seems to have done the trick - for now.[LNB]35 Zokora, already booked after being continually ripped apart by the brilliant Ashley Young, is replaced by Vedran Corluka.[LNB]34 A spell of possession for Spurs that just takes the heat out of the game for a moment or two.[LNB]32 Ashley Young skips inside past Lennon but curls a shot well wide of the Spurs goal.[LNB]31 Spurs are already getting a ticking off for time-wasting. Some of their players look out on their feet, Villa really have run them ragged since going behind.[LNB]29 Ashley Young with some brilliant play down the left. He nutmegs Zokora but his final ball lets him down. Spurs break with Modric.[LNB]28 Ashley Young's free-kick only finds a wall of Spurs players.[LNB]27 A clumsy challenge from Palacios on Ashley Young. Free-kick to Villa in a dangerous area - right on the corner of the Spurs box.[LNB]26 Woodgate heads the corner behind for another, and Spurs deal with the second flag-kick easily too.[LNB]25 Heskey brings Reo-Coker into play and he wins a corner off Assou-Ekotto.[LNB]24 Gabriel Agbonlahor does well down the Villa left and whips in a cross that Gomes takes well under pressure from Heskey.[LNB]23 Benoit Assou-Ekotto breaks up a Villa attack.[LNB]22 Zokora is cautioned for a high foot. Maybe that was a little harsh, but now he's marking Ashley Young with a yellow card hanging over him. Be careful Didier, be very careful...[LNB]21 Barry with a right-foot cross from the left and it just swings itself over the head of James Milner.[LNB]20 Ann is up reading the commentary at 6am in Hawaii, and now everything makes sense. She says: "Us Gunner fans don't actually want Spurs to win!! We just want Aston Villa to lose!" Thanks for that, Ann. Crystal clear![LNB]19 Lovely footwork from Lennon to get himself out of trouble but the ball just runs away from him.[LNB]17 Nothing comes of the Villa corner as Spurs clear their lines.[LNB]16 Ashley Young has run more in the first 15 minutes than I have in the last 15 months. He's a livewire, and he's won another corner.[LNB]15 Nigel Reo-Coker tries to thread the eye of a needle with an optimistic pass. Villa get a throw from it.[LNB]14 Now Villa counter. Young is caught by Didier Zokora but the referee plays on again. It's been a frantic opening.[LNB]13 Robbie Keane plays a lovely ball through to Bent who beats his man and plays a ball across the middle. Jenas shoots but his effort is blocked.[LNB]12 Barry goes down under a challenge from Lennon in the box but the referee is right to wave play on. To be fair, only the Villa fans appealed.[LNB]11 Ashley Young continues to tear Spurs apart. He somehow beats two Tottenham defenders on the byline and pulls a pass back to Gareth Barry who can only hit his effort against a white shirt. Somehow Spus survive and counter-attack through Lennon.[LNB]10 Heurelho Gomes catches the corner under no pressure.[LNB]9 Ashley Young's involved again - this time his cross is turned behind by Jonathan Woodgate for a Villa corner.[LNB]8 Ashley Young hits a low cross into the Spurs box and Emile Heskey turns it wide. Good response from Villa since the Spurs goal.[LNB]7 Stiliyan Petrov takes aim from 25 yards but his radar is a little off as his effort zips over the bar and into the crowd.[LNB]6 Ashley Young tumbles to the ground but there was minimal contact and the referee rightly keeps his whistle away from his mouth.[LNB]5 Ledley King plays a lovely ball through for Darren Bent who beats the offside trap. Spurs work the ball to Palacios who again shoots from 25 yards. This time Villa block the effort and clear their lines.[LNB]4 GOAL! JENAS! Luka Modric sprays a pass out wide to Aaron Lennon, who fizzes a cross in from the Spurs right. Friedel can't deal with it and Jermaine Jenas reacts first and heads the ball home from six yards. What a start for Spurs.[LNB]2 Wilson Palacios shoots from 25 yards. It takes a deflection off Zat Knight and loops into the arms of Brad Friedel.[LNB]1 Aston Villa get the game under way at Villa Park.[LNB]1559 Ben Keraro has me puzzled. Is he an Arsenal fan cheering for Spurs?! He says: "I think Villa will run away with a 2-1 victory. But my wish is that they lose so that Arsenal can stay above them for the final Champions League place next season. Arsenal are a seasoned CL performer and Villa might not even make it out of the group stages if they finish fourth in the PL. Go Spurs go!"[LNB]1550 Shaunvir Samra makes a valid point: "Spurs haven't won at Villa Park since the 2002/2003 season and with Villa just coming back from a nice sunny break in Dubai, it's a Villa win for me."[LNB] Our friends at Sky Bet go 11/10 the home win and 12/5 for both the draw and a Spurs victory.[LNB] Our referee today is Steve Bennett.[LNB] Tottenham: Gomes, Zokora, King, Woodgate, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Jenas, Palacios, Modric, Bent, Keane. Subs: Cudicini, Bentley, Huddlestone, Pavlyuchenko, Dawson, Corluka, O'Hara.[LNB] The teams are in. Aston Villa: Friedel, Reo-Coker, Cuellar, Knight, Luke Young, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, Heskey. Subs: Guzan, Harewood, Carew, Delfouneso, Davies, Shorey, Gardner.[LNB] If you've got any thoughts on today's game, email them to ben.linfoot@bskyb.com and I'll publish the best when time allows.[LNB] Welcome to our coverage of the second of the day's Barclays Premier League games. Aston Villa need to respond after Arsenal eased them out of the top four - on goal difference - by winning yesterday. Spurs, for their part, remain just three points clear of the relegation zone.[LNB]
