Villa to appeal Herd dismissal

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has confirmed the club will appeal midfielder Chris Herd's red card against West Brom on Saturday.

Herd's dismissal in the 2-1 defeat looked innocuous and replays showed little sign of the stamp on Jonas Olsson confirmed as the reason for his dismissal by referee Phil Dowd. McLeish defended the Australian at the time and confirmed on Monday he will appeal in a bid to avoid the 22-year-old suffering a three-match ban.

"Oh yes, absolutely, I don't think there's any doubt about it," he told Sky Sports.

"Looking at the pictures again, Chris has done nothing wrong.

"It's a poor decision on the day by the official. These things are not deliberate, he's made an honest mistake, it's just a shame I think that he's guessed the decision rather than saw anything."
