Aston Villa have agreed a £7million deal with Middlesbrough for striker Tuncay Sanli. Villa made their move after increased interest from Tottenham and offers from German clubs Stuttgart and Cologne. Boro manager Gareth Southgate expressed surprise that the Turkey international was still at the club last week but a deal has now been reached with £5m up front and £2m to follow in add ons. Villa manager Martin O'Neill was at Boro's game with Sheffield United on Friday and used the opportunity to run the rule over defensive pairing David Wheater and Robert Huth. O'Neill, who still hopes to fend off competition from Sunderland and Manchester City for Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin, wants a commanding centre half and sees Wheater, in particular, as a potential England regular. However, that will be reflected in Boro's asking price of around £8m. Fulham are also interested in Huth. Villa also want Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas as revealed in Sportsmail.
