Villa in For United's Carrick for £8m

Recent speculation suggests that Alex McLeish is lining up a move for Michael Carrick, hoping to capitalise on the out-of-favour midfielder and get him signed for £8 million.

Carrick will be looking for regular football since falling way down the pecking order in Fergie's team selection, particularly with the European Championships being next year.

Carrick has undoubted talent, but there is a concern that he has been overlooked due to a lack of form and not being able to command a regular first team start. Is it really the right move for Villa to move for an out-of-favour player, regardless of how reasonably priced they may seem? Perhaps a loan for the second half of the season would be more suitable?

It is to be hoped that McLeish could kickstart his form and get him to keep hold of the ball in Villa's midfield- something that Villa really need at the moment.

Of course, this is only speculation, but if it turns out to be true then McLeish's favourable relationship with Fergie should help to smooth the transfer through to completion.

It is good to hear rumours of moves to buy new players coming out of Villa Park, even if they are only speculation at the moment.
