Villa duo on course for opening day

The news is not so good, however, for right-back Luke Young who is a doubtful starter for Villa's opening fixture at home to Wigan on August 15. Midfielder Petrov and central defender Davies both suffered shoulder problems while on Peace Cup duty with Villa in Spain. The pair are making good progress although the former may not be risked in Saturday's home friendly with Fiorentina. But Young will not resume any serious training until next week after being troubled by a thigh problem, meaning the season opener may come too soon for the former Middlesbrough defender. Villa boss Martin O'Neill said: "Stiliyan is doing very well and as taken part in a bit of football in training. "I am not sure about whether he will play against Fiorentina. He has been wearing some protection on his shoulder. He just wants to get out and play. "We will see how he is. At least he is in better shape than he was a fortnight ago for us to be thinking about starting him against Wigan. "Davies has come through. That is one we will have to monitor. He wore protection on his shoulder for most of last season. This time he didn't have it on when he did the injury. "All we can do is monitor it. If it is going to be a regular feature - and it wasn't to be fair last season - then it is something we might look at. "He is happy enough to continue and the doctor is happy enough for him to continue." O'Neill added: "Luke Young in the last few days is feeling a great deal better. He is obviously frustrated because he has had no pre-season games whatsoever and that is a blow. "But I think he might start proper work again, trying to build up again next week, if everything goes well. I said that a fortnight ago when it was going well indeed. "But he felt sore again after working exceptionally hard on one of the days out in Spain but I've got my fingers crossed." Left-back Wilfred Bouma may start joining in full training again towards the end of the month after a year out of action with a dislocated ankle. The Holland international attempted a comeback in March when he played in three reserve games but required further surgery. O'Neill said: "Bouma is doing fine but that is a wee bit slow again. Maybe towards the end of the month he may be able to come and join in with us which would be encouraging. "That has been a laborious progress and there have been a few setbacks along the way. I wouldn't want to put any time-frame on it but he is definitely getting stronger."
