Martin O'Neill kicked off the most important week of his Villa Park career in stunning fashion as the leakiest defence in the Barclays Premier League lived up to their reputation.

With the Carling Cup final against Manchester United looming next Sunday and an FA Cup quarter-final place to fight over in midweek, even the reserved Aston Villa manager was forced to admit that the next seven days were something out of the ordinary.

That's exactly how you would describe his team's performance as four goals in 12minutes early in the second half wrecked any hopes Burnley boss Brian Laws may have had of springing a surprise after his side took a 10th-minute lead.

Even though Ashley Young had equalised by half-time there was littlein Villa's display until then to suggest that a goal glut lay ahead.
