United boss Fergie sees what Fabio doesn't: Goals flow when Owen plays with Rooney

With 11 Barclays Premier League titles and countless other trophies to his name Sir Alex Ferguson's judgment has rarely been called into question. But eyebrows were raised when it emerged the Manchester United manager was chasing Michael Owen's signature. The 89-cap England international became a free agent on July 1 after a miserable four years at Newcastle and appeared to be struggling to find new employers. Hull City and Stoke City expressed an interest in the 29-year-old striker, but neither club appealed to a man who played for Liverpool and Real Madrid before his ill-fated spell in the North East. HAVE YOUR SAY: Is Michael Owen's Manchester United offer a good idea? PERFECT ENGLAND PARTNERS Games together: 29 Rooney: 12 goals Owen: 11 goals Rooney mins per goal: 163 Owen mins per goal: 197 Aston Villa and Everton were also thought to be keen, but cue Ferguson shocking the football world with a move for the 2001 European Footballer of the Year and an opportunity for Owen to resurrect his career. The deal is undoubtedly a gamble for United - but one well worth taking. If Owen recaptures the form that once made him one of the most feared strikers in world football, Ferguson will be laughing all the way to a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Despite Owen's Newcastle nightmare, he still boasts an impressive goal-scoring record - particularly at international level with United's Wayne Rooney. Owen and Rooney have played 29 games together for England, scoring 23 goals between them - just under a goal every game when paired together. Shame Fabio Capello hasn't noticed, but perhaps Fergie will be proved right after all.
