Spurs target Ashley Young in talks over new deal at Aston Villa

Aston Villa have started contract talks with Ashley Young in an attempt to keep the winger out of Tottenham's reach.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a long-term admirer of Young and tried to sign him during the summer.

The 25-year-old is under contract until 2012 and had his wages increased to £65,000 a week when Spurs first made their interest known a year ago.

It's good to talk: Villa are keen to tie winger Young down to a new contract

Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner has met Young's representatives to thrash out a new deal but it is unlikley to be sorted out any time soon.

Young will wait and see how things develop under new manager Gerard Houllier before weighing up his options in January.
