Shorey fired up by Warnock's arrival

Warnock will provide direct competition for former England defender Shorey following his move from Blackburn on Thursday on a four-year contract. Shorey regained his place in the side in the final part of last season and has also started the current campaign with Wilfred Bouma still not recovered from his long term ankle setback. But the ex-Reading player will come under real threat for his spot from Warnock, who won his only England cap against Trinidad & Tobago 14 months ago. Shorey said: "It is a challenge. Obviously he (Warnock) is a left-back. A club like Villa are going to be signing players all the time in your position. "You've just got to get on with it, do your best and hopefully you will get a game. If not, then we will wait and see what happens. "But I am up for the challenge. I want to play football. That is my main aim and, if someone gets in the way, you've got to make sure you are playing better than them. That's all you can do. "If we are playing well and winning, hopefully I will stay in the team." Villa triumphed 2-1 over Rapid Vienna on Thursday evening but went out of the Europa League at the last qualifying hurdle on away goals after the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate. Shorey admits it is a bitter blow for the club but knows they have to bounce back in positive style when they entertain Fulham in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday. He said: "Going out of Europe is a blow but we knew it was going to be a tough ask even though we were at home for the second leg. "We never felt comfortable when they only needed one goal to make us have to get another - and that is what happened. It was not a great night. "But hopefully it will spur us on to do well in the league and we can qualify for Europe again. We've got a game on Sunday so we can't dwell on it. "We've got to make sure we get ourselves up straight away and put in a good performance on Sunday. "The disappointing thing is we worked so hard to get a chance to play in Europe and then we don't make it after the first qualifying round we take part in. "It is a shame for all of us. Some of the senior players haven't played a lot in Europe so it is disappointing for all of us. "You have got to try and take the positives from it and we will maybe get a bit more rest in between games and go for it in the Premier League. But it is not ideal and we would rather be playing the matches." Shorey admits that Villa have to learn to break down sides at home after struggling to do so last season, but he is aware Fulham will be a tough nut to crack. He said: "It is always hard against Fulham. They drew at our place last season. They are very resolute and solid, they stay in their formation, especially away from home. "They had a lot of 0-0 and 1-1 draws last season so it is going to be tough to break them down. "Breaking sides down at home is hard. You've got to be patient, ourselves as well as the fans. Teams come here and do sit here behind the ball. "You've got to try and break them down. It is not an easy thing to do, no matter what team you are. There is not a lot you can do. "We've got to be patient, like we were against Vienna. Unfortunately, we just got caught on the break and that was a shame." Aston Villa v Fulham. Click here to bet.
